Domestic Paper Shredding: Your Options in Scotland

3 min read

Almost every home has one: a drawer, box or corner of the loft full of old bank statements, payslips, utility bills and letters. Getting rid of it safely is another matter. A home shredder can take a whole weekend to get through a few boxes. Domestic paper shredding is a quicker, more secure alternative, and in Scotland you have more options than you might think.

Why shouldn't household paperwork just go in the recycling bin?

Personal documents are exactly what identity thieves look for. Police Scotland warns that criminals can steal identities using statements found in household rubbish, and Neighbourhood Watch Scotland advises against putting paperwork with personal details in your recycling or general waste. Cifas recorded over 242,000 cases of identity fraud across the UK in 2025.

Anything showing your name, address, date of birth, account numbers or signature should be shredded, not binned. Our guide to what to do with your personal documents at home explains what counts.

In short: if it has your personal details on it, shred it before it leaves your home.

What domestic paper shredding options are available in Scotland?

You can either bring your paperwork to us or have us collect it. The right choice usually comes down to how much you have and where you live. For more on the pros and cons of each, read waste paper collection or drop-off: which is best for me?

In short: drop off smaller loads if you're nearby, and book a collection for bigger clear-outs or if you're further away.

What happens when you drop off paperwork for shredding?

Our business and public drop-off service takes just minutes. Fill any household bag or box with your paperwork and head to our shredding centre at 7–10 Linwood Avenue, East Kilbride, G74 5NE.

When you arrive, look for the Public Drop-Off sign and the parking bays marked with yellow lines at the front of the building. Reverse park, press the buzzer, and a member of our team will take your bags. You'll receive a receipt and a declaration of destruction, signed by your shredding advisor.

Your paperwork is shredded the same day. If you'd like extra reassurance, just ask, and we'll take you to our viewing area to watch it happen.

In short: park, press the buzzer, hand over your bags and leave with a receipt.

How much does domestic paper shredding cost?

Drop-off shredding costs £3.30 per bag with no minimum, so it works just as well for one bag as for ten. If you need formal proof, we can issue a certificate of destruction for an additional £1.30.

To store paperwork securely between visits, you can also buy our self-sealing, double-ply confidential waste bags for £1.30 each. They're always in stock at our centre.

In short: £3.30 per bag to drop off, with optional certificates and secure bags at £1.30 each.

Can you arrange a domestic shredding collection from home?

Yes. If you can't get to East Kilbride, or you're clearing out a lot at once, you can order our secure shredding bags online. Each extra-strong, self-sealing bag holds roughly the same as a standard archive box, and the bag and its contents are shredded together, so it never needs to be opened again.

Bags are £3.30 each plus VAT, with a minimum order that varies by area, from 10 bags in Glasgow, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire up to 24 in the Scottish Borders. Our uniformed drivers collect in secure, tracked vehicles, and you'll receive an electronic waste transfer note and certificate of destruction. See our shredding options page for more detail.

In short: order bags online, fill them at home, and we'll collect them securely from your door.

What happens to your paper after it's shredded?

All paperwork is destroyed in our secure, CCTV-monitored facility to EN15713, the standard for secure destruction of confidential material. It's then baled and 100% recycled, so nothing goes to landfill. Find out more about the shredding process.

In short: your paper is destroyed securely and then recycled in full.
